Ever get tired of staying in hostels and cheap home stays while backpacking in South East Asia? This eco-house is the perfect solution to still have the backpacking experience while also having your own space and staying in a unique, cool location.
Pai is one of Thailand’s hidden gems. Located up the north only 3 hours from Chiang Mai, the hippy town is renowned for it’s street food, nightlife, and hikes around the town. Most hostels will offer the same experience at the same price, however if you’re looking for a unique experience and can afford to pay a little bit extra, I would definitely recommend staying at the Mushroom House.
The Mushroom House is only 5km from Pai town and 3km from Pai Canyon where you can watch an epic sunset and explore various hiking trails. The house is shaped like a mushroom (evidently) and everything is made from local materials like straw, wood, and has wattle and daub interior walls. This place was built with amazingly creativity. It has everything you need from a mattress on the floor that can be fold up to act as a couch during the day, a bamboo ladder to climb up to the second floor where you can find a hammock to chill out in, read a book, or just enjoy the mountainous scenery. There is an outdoor kitchen which is quite common in Thailand that includes a fridge, gas cooker and basic kitchen utensils.
My experience at this eco-house was so pleasant, it was something different and was such a cool experience. My favourite part about my trip to Pai was meeting people and telling them “I’m staying in a Mushroom House” and they were so amazed when I shared pictures! The only downfall to the accommodation is that it is 5km from the town so you will need a bike if you want to get around promptly. There are also roosters across the road that woke us up at around 6am every morning… but hey, the early bird catches the worm! I would definitely return to this place!
Would love to visit some day, will definitely keep this place in mind!
